The remote System Administrator will function as a team member on a “virtual service desk/NOC” to proactively monitor and manage the DHS Homeland Security Information Network (HSIN). This team will complement the current O&M/Help Desk team by actively monitoring and managing the HSIN environment to facilitate the effective and efficient resolution of incidents and service requests.


HSIN is an AWS Cloud hosted, Web-based, Sensitive but Unclassified, IT system that provides Federal, State, Local, Tribal, Private Sector and International stakeholders with an effective and efficient system for timely information sharing, collaboration, decision making, and situational awareness. The System Administrator will be responsible for monitoring and administering servers/OS, LAN devices, and various applications that support collaboration and communication, such as secure conferencing/shared whiteboard, messaging, emailing, and document sharing.  Must be available to be on-call and support special project needs. 


  • Proactively monitor and manage a mixed Linux and Windows environment.Monitor and maintain a mixed Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Windows servers running in AWS GovCloud environment
  • Respond to system alerts, provide initial assessment of issues/problems, assess impact of the alert with respect to HSIN system availability/performance and provide “hands-on” resolution
  • Where necessary, coordinate with team members to ensure that complex issues that cannot be resolved at this tier are forwarded to the appropriate O&M or Engineering Team member for timely resolution. Follow up to ensure issues are resolved and documented
  • Configure, monitor and manage HSIN local area network devices/services in the AWS GovCloud, including load balancer, firewalls and subnetting
  • Automate/script manual tasks to improve efficiency and reduce human errors
  • Patch and update OS, Middleware and Applications
  • Baseline normal system performance and respond when HSIN components are over utilized
  • Perform backup and restores
  • Create and maintain documentation
  • Where necessary, support the HSIN change request process
  • Provide on-call support 24/7 per routine schedule


  • Must have 5 or more years of professional IT experience with Linux and Windows System Administration
  • Experience with configuring and managing Cloud LAN environments including VLANs and subnetting
  • Must have 5 or more years managing virtual servers and cloud based environment
  • Experience configuring and maintaining Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and LDAP
  • Experience with Microsoft Service Center, Nagios, and Cloud Watch
  • Experience with Puppet and Atlassian tools
  • Experience customizing and automating tasks within Microsoft Service Center
  • Experience with operating and maintaining collaboration and communication applications. Preference for Adobe Connect, Mattermost Chat, and Exchange
  • Experience backing up and restoring servers

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Familiarity with Amazon RDS Database
  • MSSQL experience
  • SharePoint Admin experience a plus
  • Netbackup experience is a plus
